Maybe I should look into a career in ophthalmology…

Monkey has a cyst under each eye. We’ve been to the doctor three times about them, then an optometrist and finally an ophthalmologist. Here is what Monkey’s eyes looked like before our visit to the ophthalmologist:

Monkey's eyes

Here is what they look like now, a week after our $90.00 “specialist” visit:

Monkey's eyes

Wait. Isn’t that the exact same picture? You ask. Why, yes. Yes it is the exact same picture. Why? Well, after the ophthalmologists assistant shone a light in Monkey’s eyes and the ophthalmologist pulled her lower lids down to have a quick look he put us on a list to have them drained at the hospital. Sounds great right? It would be except the wait is anywhere up to twelve months. Twelve. Freaking. Months. A year even. The receptionist at the desk made sure I was aware that reason we had to wait was because we are in the public health system. And just so she was sure I understood what a complete low life I was she managed to mention this four times in the five minutes it took to get our bill settled. Bitch.

The doctors keep telling me that the cysts may go away on their own, but since they have progressively gotten worse over the last six or so months I don’t see that happening. We’re going to see how much it would cost to have the procedure done, but considering the $90.00 it cost just to have a light shone in her little eyes I’m guessing it might be out of our ballpark. I just don’t want her to have them for another year. She’s a beautiful girl (OK, maybe I’m biased…) and the first thing anyone notices at the moment are those damn cysts.

  1. I’m so sorry. Even $90 sounds damned expensive for ‘public’ health!

Poor Monkey. Please tell her I think she’s still pretty 🙂

    *hugs*
    lil sis

  2. Twelve months is just ridiculous! I hope they’re not causing her too much trouble and you too much worry. I agree with lil sis – she’s still very beautiful.

  3. That is ludicrous. I hope they are not causing her too much pain (I know they are for you though…). That is just ridiculous.

$90 for a light in her eyes. And I thought the US was bad with healthcare.

I had an ER visit this past weekend, can’t WAIT for that bill to roll around.

  4. Oh no! I had no idea. They’ve been there for six months and I never noticed? Damn, I feel like a loser.

I can’t believe you still had to pay $90 in a public health care system and get the lip from the bitch. Ack.

Everything will be okay. Enough people have told me that recently that I’m totally believing it.

Monkey, you are beautiful no matter what.

  5. You may be biased, but she IS beautiful. And I agree with everyone else–a year is ridiculous!

  6. Poor kid. That looks very uncomfortable. I hope they work her in sooner than 12 months. Twelve months is unacceptable!!!

  7. Twelve months is insane. Poor, beautiful Monkey.

  8. oh no not biased she is beautiful…. my eyes got all blurry with that story, the poor little dah- ling. Poor Mommy too. Some people are just sooo inconsiderate when it come to insurance and money and such. I would have showed her what type of ” low life ” I am and slapped her slilly. ( okay mayyyybee not ) but really you paid your bill right then and there not 4 months from now.
I hope that the procedure is in your budgte if not… she will always be beautifula nd at least she is young enough where she pay’s no mind to them. Lots of love sent your way!

  9. Poor Monkers! Do they hurt her? I would have asked the receptionist if she had a bad stutter. After being a medical clerk for a year (Jenn will agree with me on this one), no matter how cranky I was or how much I despised the patient (lets face it, some are just monsters), I would never be ignorant towards them or intentionally belittle them!

  11. I’m so sorry about all this! She is just so pretty, and I’m sure it’s hard to see her compromised like this. I’m even more sorry that system is treating you this way.

I’m so glad you found me! My laptop died just after you switched over to the anon world, so I lost all my favorites, your new address included. I’ve missed learning how your little family is doing, and now have much to catch up on.

    Have a great day.
